Our guest speakers this week were Matt Bourke and Amanda Moore Container Deposit Scheme , Alexandra.
The depot is operated by Matt Bourke and Amanda Moore at the Iceworks accessed off Binns Mccraes Rd Alexandra.
Matt is a long time Alexandra resident, taught by our members John Cannon and Bob Flowers before working for his father Ivan as a refrigeration mechanic and small appliance repairer.
Amanda is also locally born and bred and has worked in hospitality and nursing.
When the container deposit scheme (CDS) was introduced in Victoria, Matt approached Visy to set up a local depot. The approval process was easier as he was extending the scope of his existing business.
They started in August 2024 with 15 bins which soon increased to 25 and has now reached 50. This may change again with recent closure of Eildon site.
How does the scheme work?
Containers are registered before they leave the manufacturers' premises, but not all containers are redeemed.
An OTC depot such as Alex can handle a larger amount of product than some of the vending machine facilities.
As the business develops so is the infrastructure. The bulk of the product received is cans, and counting has been mechanised with a machine Matt has created, the Bourkeneater.
Most wine bottles are not eligible in Victoria's CDS.
Cans should NOT be crushed before redemption under the scheme. Although crushing on site would reduce transport costs, crushed cans DO NOT bind into a hard cell, so have a lesser value at next stage of processing ie scrap value only .
Collected cans are transported to Shepparton for the next stage of processing.
The depot has 180 x 240L wheelie bins which can be provided to venues when hosting an event. The last rodeo generated 16,000 cans.
Looking forward, they would like to employ some younger staff, and /or part time older staff.
Opening hours are expected to expand over summer but are currently 9am-3pm Tues -Wed and 9am-1pm Fri- Sat.
To maximise the value of product collected the streams need to be separated into plastic, glass and aluminium. DON'T CRUSH CANS.
You can nominate a charity to receive the proceeds from returned containers though the CDS app for Apple or Android. Matt and Amanda can help.
ADFNC has earned $20K for the year, while Yarck CFA has bins at their shed and outside Bucks Bakehouse.
An interesting presentation.
