Sue Hendy Presentation on Positive Ageing at our recent meeting .
Sue describes herself as a life explorer and ageing activist.
Her career in the field began as a 17-year-old at Willsmere in Kew washing floors and residents. This sparked an interest in human rights as she tried to make life better for the 1200 residents, many affected by dementia.
Her next position was as the first Recreation Worker at Mount Royal in Parkville. There she initiated a fundraising drive which enabled the purchase of a second-hand vehicle from Yooralla, suitable for their mainly wheelchair-bound residents.
Many trips followed, to shows such as Oklahoma, to the football, to Tullamarine Airport for coffee and watching planes arrive and depart.
Sue is passionate about fighting the perception that As we age, we lose capacity.
Through her career Sue has been a Director of the International Federation on Ageing, CEO of COTA (Council of the Ageing), a board member at Doutta Galla Aged Services and is currently working toward a Certificate III in Fitness so that she can help staff the new Marysville Gym.
How do we perceive ageing of ourselves and others?
Do we need to display S (senior) plates on our vehicles?
When is old?

When is old?
It is Sue's firm belief that Capacity and Age are NOT linked.
By living longer and living stronger, older people are able to live a fulfilling life.
The key to maintaining capacity is Progressive Resistance Strength Training, combined with good nutrition.
Our bodies do better when we are active. Muscles need to be strengthened, stretched and exercised, with recovery between training sessions.
Being physically active is important for diabetics, as it helps manage weight and reduce insulin-resistance.
Memory loss is NOT ALWAYS the beginning of Alzheimers disease. Young people forget things too!
Stress, grief and lack of sleep can also affect memory, but can often be managed.
You can be AMAZING at any age.
While some acquire disability at an early age it is still possible to live a fulfilled life.
Celebrate being older.
It is your choice to grab life with both hands and go for it!
You have capacity if you choose to.
Progressive Resistance Strength Training is individualised as each person has a different start point. Ideal frequency is 3 times a week, allowing for recovery between sessions.
